Understand the YKI exam

What is the YKI exam?
YKI (Yleinen kielitutkinto) is a general language proficiency exam for adults — it measures how well you can use the language in real, everyday situations. The exam is overseen by the Finnish National Agency for Education (OPH), and administered in practice by the University of Jyväskylä.
Employers, educational institutions, and immigration authorities (Migri) recognize the certificate. Passing the intermediate level is a key requirement for Finnish citizenship.
The YKI exam is available in nine languages, but this guide — and YKIprep itself — focuses on the Finnish exam, which is what most people preparing for citizenship or working life in Finland actually need.
Taking the YKI exam

Choose a level and exam date
Decide which level you need (basic, intermediate, or highest), and pick a suitable exam date and language. Intermediate level is the level required for citizenship.
Register online
Register at yki.opintopolku.fi during the registration period by signing in with Suomi.fi authentication. Popular exams fill up fast — spots on the waiting list can still open up up to 9 days before the exam.
Pay and prepare
Pay via the link you receive by email. As of 1 Jan 2026, paid registrations are binding and the exam slot cannot be rescheduled. After that, study the exam structure and practice all four subtests.
Take the exam and get your results
Complete all four subtests (missing even one means you won't receive a certificate). Grading takes about two months, after which the certificate is delivered digitally via Oma Opintopolku or by post.

Each subtest is graded separately. To receive a certificate, you must complete all four.
Reading comprehensionClassroom
You read and understand Finnish texts, forms, emails, and articles, and answer questions that test whether you can pick out the essential information.
WritingClassroom
You write messages, emails, and short texts in Finnish. Grading covers grammar, vocabulary, and how clear and coherent your communication is.
Listening comprehensionLanguage studio
You listen to Finnish conversations, announcements, and news, and answer questions about what you heard.
SpeakingLanguage studio
You complete spoken tasks — reacting to situations, describing and narrating events, and expressing and justifying opinions. Recorded in a language studio.
Reading comprehension and writing are done in a classroom; listening comprehension and speaking usually happen in a language studio. All four subtests are usually held on the same exam day.
YKI levels explained
Basic level (CEFR A1–A2)
You manage simple everyday communication — greetings, shopping, and simple requests. The basic-level test takes about 5 hours (including breaks).
Intermediate level (CEFR B1–B2)
You communicate fluently in work and social situations, express opinions, and handle formal communication too. The intermediate-level test takes about 5 hours. Level 3 is required for Finnish citizenship.
Required for citizenshipHighest level (CEFR C1–C2)
Professional-level fluency — you produce complex texts, understand academic content, and take part in nuanced discussion. The highest-level test takes about 6 hours.

Migri requires at least grade 3 (CEFR B1) on the intermediate-level exam, in one of these approved subtest combinations:

Fees for the full exam (0% VAT). Taking a single subtest (Finnish and Swedish intermediate level) is possible on selected exam dates. Re-assessment of a subtest costs €108 and is refunded if the grade changes.

The YKI (National Certificate of Language Proficiency) is a language exam for adults that measures your ability to use the language in everyday situations. It is overseen by the Finnish National Agency for Education (OPH), and administered in practice by the University of Jyväskylä.
You need the intermediate-level exam, with at least grade 3 (CEFR B1) in an approved combination of two subtests: speaking + writing, listening comprehension + writing, or reading comprehension + speaking. Both Finnish and Swedish are accepted, and you can also combine two certificates that together form an approved pair.
Four separately graded subtests: reading comprehension, writing, listening comprehension, and speaking. Reading comprehension and writing are done in a classroom; listening comprehension and speaking usually happen in a language studio. All four are usually held on the same day.
Registration fees are €165 (basic level), €190 (intermediate level), and €216 (highest level). On selected exam dates, the Finnish and Swedish intermediate-level subtests can also be taken individually (€43 reading comprehension, €43 listening comprehension, €70 writing, €84 speaking).
The YKI exam is held twice a year, in spring and autumn. You register online at yki.opintopolku.fi during the registration period, using Suomi.fi authentication. Spots are limited and can fill up quickly, so it's worth registering early.
Grading takes about two months from the exam date. For exams held on or after 1 April 2026, the certificate is delivered digitally via Oma Opintopolku; otherwise a printed certificate is mailed to you. The YKI certificate does not expire.
